Why we should support International Day of Forests and World Water Day

It is a busy weekend ahead on the environment calendar, with International Day of Forests on Saturday and World Water Day on Sunday. Although they don’t carry the hype of many other designated days throughout the year, they do provide a platform to raise awareness and debate the issues surrounding how we manage forest and water resources.One third of the earth’s land mass is covered by forests. In January 2011, I was given the opportunity to travel to Indonesia as part of Solaris Paper’s Open Doors Program. The program, which is still ongoing, invites people from all over the world to see firsthand how Solaris Paper’s affiliate Asia Pulp and Paper operates. As drought continues to affect many parts of rural Queensland, it’s important we remember the farmers and communities that are doing it tough out there. I see it first hand when I drive out to some of these areas in my role as an account executive for Solaris Paper. So when I heard what Anthony and Vicki Quirk of Burdekin Distributors and Pro Quality Fish had planned for 25 Queensland farming families, I knew the team at Solaris Paper would be willing to help.

As we get older, it’s important we keep our independence and utilise the support systems that get us from A to B. This can be a challenge for the elderly, but one charity that is helping them to stay mobile is Comlink. The non for profit provides transport and care services for the elderly and transport disadvantaged throughout Queensland.

Setting a table with fine china plates, silverware, crystal and napkins used to be an everyday thing. These days, that kind of dining experience is mostly found in fine dining restaurants and rarely in other hospitality establishments.

But bringing an element of this lost art to the forefront of any tabletop setting can mean the difference between true dining and just eating. An inviting table in a restaurant, café or when catering for an event, reflects your offer to your patrons. Even the simplest meals can seem like a culinary delight when served in an interesting setting.
